Facilities
Unlike most Secondary Schools in the country, Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School is blessed in having a huge variety of facilities that are spread across five sites within Ramsgate. This spread enables us to provide a wide curriculum offer to our students, enabling them to have the best opportunities to develop and flourish within their learning journey.
Behind the historic facades, students are able to access over 100 well equipped specialist teaching rooms, including a total of 14 Science laboratories; 7 Technology workshops; 7 ICT suites; 4 Art studios; 12 Music and Music Technology studios and two Drama studios with full sound and lighting facilities.
The Chatham House, Lower School, site includes excellent outdoor facilities for Sport and PE with pitches for Rugby and Football, Cricket and Athletics as well as an All Weather Surface used for various sports.
In addition to two School Libraries, students have access to many study rooms and 'quiet' areas around the school.
The Sixth Form centre, based in Cavendish Street, caters for over 500 sixth form students - the centre includes a large Common Room which provides access to over 30 computers and a large seating area and cafeteria.

Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School is currently delivering an exciting programme of improvement works worth more than £10 million, designed to enhance safety, sustainability and learning environments across our historic school buildings.
As custodians of some of Ramsgate's most significant educational buildings, we are committed to preserving their unique heritage while ensuring they continue to meet the needs of modern education. Every project is carefully planned and delivered in consultation with specialist consultants, contractors and local planning authorities to ensure that improvements complement the character of our historic estate.
Working alongside AEC Estate Consultants, Primech, Evolution BS Fire Doors and the Department for Education, these substantial investments are helping to secure the future of our school while ensuring teaching and learning remain our top priority.
Sustainability and Energy Improvements
The school has already made significant progress towards its sustainability goals through investment in modern, energy-efficient technologies.
Recent improvements include:
- Installation of Air Source Heat Pumps within the Chatham House plant room.
- Solar panels installed at the Beresford Science Facility.
- Ongoing investment in energy-efficient heating systems designed to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption.
These initiatives support the school's commitment to environmental sustainability while helping to reduce long-term energy costs.
£2.8 Million Heating Upgrade
A major heating improvement programme is currently underway across the school estate.
The project includes:
- New energy-efficient boilers
- Modern heating infrastructure
- Improved controls and energy management systems
- Integration with renewable energy technology
These improvements will provide a warmer, more comfortable environment for staff and students while significantly improving energy efficiency.
£3.5 Million Electrical and Fire Safety Project
Primech is currently delivering a comprehensive upgrade of the school's electrical and fire safety infrastructure.
Works include:
- New electrical wiring throughout buildings
- Modern LED lighting across teaching spaces
- Enhanced fire safety measures
- Upgraded electrical systems to support future developments
The project will create safer, brighter and more energy-efficient learning environments for everyone using the school facilities.
£1.5 Million Fire Door Replacement Programme
Beginning in October 2026, Evolution BS Fire Doors will undertake a major project to replace internal doors across the school with modern fire-rated doors that meet current safety standards.
Within heritage areas of the school, bespoke handcrafted replica doors will be installed to preserve the architectural character of the buildings while providing modern fire protection.
This project will improve safety throughout the estate whilst also enhancing the appearance of classrooms and corridors.
£1.4 Million Water Quality Improvement Project
The school is currently developing plans for a significant water infrastructure improvement programme.
Proposals include:
- Additional water bottle refill stations
- Energy-efficient hot water dispensers
- Replacement sinks and taps
- Improvements to water quality across the site
These improvements will provide modern facilities for students and staff whilst supporting sustainability objectives.
Looking Ahead: School Rebuilding Programme
Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School has also been selected for the Government's School Rebuilding Programme (SRP).
The Department for Education has advised that the pre-feasibility stage is expected to commence during the next financial year, with initial site visits anticipated from April 2027 onwards.
The proposed development will replace the existing Redmen Building with a flagship STEM facility designed to support future generations of learners.
The new building is expected to include:
- State-of-the-art Science laboratories
- Modern Design and Technology facilities
- Contemporary Mathematics classrooms
- Flexible learning spaces equipped for future educational needs
This exciting development represents a major investment in the long-term future of the school and will provide exceptional facilities to support teaching and learning.
