Courses
Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3 we work through the New Maths Frameworking, incorporating a strong element of Functional Skills and as part of the new curriculum we add emphasis on fluency, reasoning, problem-solving, and arithmetic.
Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4 we follow the Edexcel Higher GCSE Linear Mathematics Specification. Our most able mathematicians also study for AQA Level 2 Further Mathematics certificate which is equivalent to another GCSE. In these two years we build on students’ knowledge and teach them to apply their skills and reasoning to provide clear mathematical arguments. We provide challenge for the most able students within lessons and by participating in UKMT Maths challenges. We stimulate their interest by attending popular Maths lectures and shows.
GCSE MATHS
Our year 10 students follow the new GCSE course which will enable students to
- develop fluent knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts
- acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems
- reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences and draw conclusions
- comprehend, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.
The Maths examination is tiered. The Foundation Tier will give access to grades 1-5, and the Higher Tier 4-9, the vast majority of our students will be entered for the Higher Tier.
Our students have already benefited from the changes at KS3 with an increased emphasis on problem solving within each topic making them better prepared for the more challenging nature of the new GCSE.
We offer the AQA level 2 certificate in Further Mathematics to our most able mathematicians.
Key Stage 5
At Key Stage 5 we follow the Edexcel Specification leading to A level Mathematics and, for the most committed mathematicians, Further Mathematics. These courses cover areas in Statistics, Mechanics as well as the Pure maths topics.
At all Key Stages we subscribe to the MyMaths website to compliment a range of learning styles. We also use Dr Frost maths website to support our students' online learning.
