Annual Primary Rugby Festival: Another Great Success !

15th February 2013

We might have assumed that the cancellation of the pre-Christmas tournament, due to freezing conditions might have diluted the enthusiasm of our local primary schools. We would have been wrong. The 7th such event of its type was another wonderful display of flowing and enthusiastic touch rugby. 6 schools, providing 8 teams had a wonderful time, despite the hail storms and a close contest brought out the best in the players. The event staged by Rugby Academy students and Sports Leaders at CCGS was attended by a large number of parental spectators keen to cheer their team on, who were provided with much needed cups of tea to keep out the cold.

The group stages saw St Nicholas A just pip St Peter’s to top place in Group 1, leaving them with what should have been the easier semi-final against Chilton, who were 2nd in Group 2, just behind Dame Janet….

The tables were turned in both the semi-finals though and Chilton came through in a nail-biter to face up to St Peter’s who just beat Dame Janet, 2 tries to 1.

The final was so close, with Chilton dominating for long periods, taking an early lead, but with St Peter’s speedy team, they were dangerous on the break. The Broadstairs side equalised right near the end. The result hung in the balance as the match went into injury time. Chilton finally broke the strong defence in front of them to clinch this title for the first time….

In the presentation ceremony, James Makestaad of the CCGS Rugby Academy presented the awards, including the Player of the Tournament certificate to Olivia Godden of St Peter’s.

Big thanks were given to the Academy Managers, Mr Goodwin and Mr Wakefield for all of their efforts in such difficult conditions. Dave Walton, School Sport Organiser at CCGS, who oversaw the planning of the event, asked all who took part if they had enjoyed themselves. The answer was a resounding and very loud “YES”

Positions: 1st Chilton, 2nd St Peter’s, 3rd Dame Janet, 4th St Nicholas ‘A’ 5th St Nicholas ‘B’ 6th Holy Trinity Ramsgate, 7th St Laurence-in-Thanet, 8th Barbarians
