I would like to extend my sincerest congratulations to Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School for your exceptional production of The Tempest as part of the 2020 Shakespeare Schools Festival, One Night of Shakespeare. Against all odds you have shown the world that theatre can be created in the darkest of times, demonstrating the best of yourselves. It was a wonderful performance, and I’d like to highlight a few aspects that really stood out.

What a multi-talented cast! You are clearly not only brilliant Shakespearean actors, but dancers, singers, and film editors too! It was lovely to see a production that utilised its entire ensemble’s strengths and skills to create a really memorable show.

Ariel’s dance scene was such a ‘wow’ moment with which to open. The use of voiceover here was so clever, and created an exciting and unique shipwreck.

Every cast member had a strong command of the language and delivered their lines with confidence and clarity. You were able to bring out the different moods of the play very skilfully – from mysterious to romantic, from tense to joyful. You had made bold choices and portrayed some very powerful and fierce characters.

I was so impressed by the creative editing across bubbles to showcase the whole cast. You really proved that theatre can still not only be possible but exciting and inventive in times of limit and restriction. You handled a difficult set of circumstances with grace and poise, and produced something that was such a pleasure to watch. This was a stylish and inventive production of The Tempest from a creative and talented ensemble.

I am in awe of your boundless creativity, talent and determination. This was the year for experimentation and you rose to the challenge of performing Shakespeare for the camera with bravery, resilience and ingenuity. This demonstrates a great deal of maturity as actors, and innovation as theatre-makers. I know you will look back on 2020 with a great deal of pride at what you have achieved especially in light of the challenges you have faced. You all deserve a round of applause and standing ovation!
