Swimming Gala 2019

15th March 2019

Another fantastic year at the Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School Swimming Gala. The records which improve every year were once again smashed with a total of 13 different records broken over all the individual and team events. The turnout was one of the best we have had in many years which culminated in a fantastic event. Well done to all swimmers, not just those who broke records but those who turn up for their house as often it is these individuals who make the gala so successful.

The individual events saw eight new records across backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly disciplines, and no new records were set for the freestyle. The first new record of the day belonged to Ollie Pope in the year 8 backstroke, a record dating back to 2009. Following her well know family name in CCGS swimming Anika Ganesaratnam also broke the year 8 backstroke for the girls. All-rounder Lily Jewell also broke the final backstroke record of the day for the senior girls. Lily had one of her old records broken in the 25m butterfly by year 8 student Nuri Jivraj De Jong. The only 25m butterfly records went to Olivia Parpworth in year 7 and Jasmine Watson in year 10. The only breaststroke record was broken in the year 7 girls 50m race by Grace Cummings. The final individual record was broken by Max Parpworth in the new 50m butterfly event.

The medley relays were very busy as always with some very close races in all age groups. The year 8 RP girls broke the record and will be hoping they can keep up this success after breaking the record last year too. Both year senior boys from RP and senior girls from MS broke the medley relay recors whilst MS senior girls also took the freestyle and house relay records making them a formidable team to beat in the future.

Overall it was an excellent day, the quality of swimming was again outstanding, and equally impressive was the support for all levels of swimmers who were cheered on for competing for their house ensuring the houses did as well as possible. Thank you to all who took part and all who supported the event.

Overall results are as follows:

1st – MS – 769 points

2nd – RP – 735 points

3rd – TS – 700 points

4th – KH – 684 point
