STEM at Work

10th January 2017

A small selection of year 8 and year 9 students had the opportunity to visit Canterbury Christ Church University for the day to learn about some of the different career possibilities in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

We kicked off with a trip to outer space- a short video and demonstration inside an Astrodome introduced by an astrophysicist informed the students of some possible careers in the world of Space Exploration.

A minty-smelling room helped the students understand the plant origins of modern medicines, which helped them in their next workshop learning about the Chemistry of medicines and the careers available in that field.

An exciting and explosive ‘Elements at Work’ Science show rounded off the day, with students finding out about different elements in a way that would be unobtainable in a regular secondary school classroom.

An exhilarating and informative day that opened the eyes of the students to a world of STEM careers that they may have otherwise overlooked.
