Netball trip to Wembley Arena – England v South Africa

7th October 2013

On Wednesday 25th September, the CCGS netball squad took a trip to London’s Wembley Arena to watch the second match in the international netball series between England and South Africa. Overall, the trip was a fantastic experience for the Sixth Form Girls and the match resulted in a 51-33 win for England over the opposing team, which carried on their 100% record for 2013.

Before the game had started, the 5,000 fans that filled the arena created an electric atmosphere which added to the pre-match tension. Chants for England echoed through the arena waiting for the players to come onto the court. Fireworks exploded and the South African players were called out one by one, followed by the England players – which created an uproar of volume. After each national anthem was played, the players took their place on court and waited for the whistle.

Both on court umpires did an impressive job to keep up with the ultimate fast pace from either team and it was a thrilling start for England with our ‘goal shooter’, Jo Harten, making an impact with a turnover in the first few minutes. The England defence were even more impressive with a combined ability to keep stealing the possession on a regular basis. The tempo of the match had cranked up and play was exhilarating to watch. After such an epic first quarter, the England team didn’t disappoint in the next two quarters, but kept up the accuracy of shooting, passing and defending to take an incredible 41-25 lead with fifteen minutes remaining. The last quarter topped of the quality of play, seeing South Africa lose possession frequently and the England ladies triumphing to a lovely win.

Most of the team thought of this trip as a valuable experience – allowing us to watch and appreciate the talent that the top players in our Country have. Many of us have taken things from the match and used these to improve our game and hopefully make us a better and more combined team in the future. The experience was amazing and I think that I can safely say, on behalf of the netball team, thank you to the PE Department and especially Mrs Edwards and Mrs Carpenter for organising such an incredible day, which we hope we can do again in the near future.

Natalie Fox, 13MSb (Captain)
